DARBAR REVIEW

Darbar is Superstar Rajinikanth's first collaboration with AR Murugadoss. This collaboration has set decent expectations for the film. The trailer of the film intensified the expectations.

The trailer also hinted that it will be an Action-Drama film with mass elements. The film released today, let's see how the film is..

Story:

Adithya Arunachalam(Rajinikanth) is an aggressive police commissioner. He goes on hunting drug dealers in the city. His aggression and violent behavior irk the Human Rights Commission. The Head of Humans rights Commission gets to know the past of Adithya Arunachalam through one of the police officers. What's the sad past of Adithya Arunachalam? How his life is connected to Mafia head Hari Chopra (Sunil Shetty), forms the rest of the story.

Analysis:

From the Beginning scene, it is clear that the director Murugadoss has tried to brink back the vintage Rajinikanth style and mannerisms. It looks like, Murugadoss intentionally not given importance to the story. The plot is quite routine and everything is predictable.

Director Murugadoss hits the bullseye when it comes to entertaining the Rajini fans and Mass audience. However, he succeeds only partial in satisfying the neutral audience.

First Half of the film is racy. It is packed with action drama and a few entertaining scenes between Rajini and Nayanthara. Rajini entertains with his style and mannerisms. The Second Half is emotional. Emotional Scenes between Nivetha Thomas and Rajinikanth are handled very well. The Film's graph starts falling when the revenge drama starts. The plans of Commissioner Adithya Arunachalam to trace Mafia head Hari Chopra are interesting. However, it ends up in a predictable and routine manner. The climax is very routine.

Artists performance:

Rajini is at his best. His vintage styles and mannerisms make the audience clap and whistle. Nayantara looks very cute but her role is very limited. Nivetha Thomas is apt and gives her best in Rajini's Daughter role.

Sunil Shetty looks deadly with villainy looks. His performance is good. However, his character is not well established by the director. Yogi Babu generates some good laughs.

Technical aspects:

Cinematography by Santhosh Sivan is top-notch. The background score by Anirudh is superb. He elevates many scenes with his background score. Production values by Lyca are grand. Editing should've been crisper in the second half.

Plus Points:

Rajinikanth's style, performance and screen presence
Action sequences
Mass elements
1st half

Minus Points:

Routine and predictable story
Second half-length
Bad Climax

Conclusion:

Darbar is a complete feast for Rajini fans and Mass audience. However, the content of the film is quite routine and predictable. Rajini style, mannerisms, and performance make it a watchable film for the neutral audience.
